Bicycle Route Notes

These are field notes from research on the bicycle map of Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. These are rough notes but give flavor of the various routes. They should be used in conjunction with the map which can be purchased at local bike stores or the publisher: bikeverywhere.

The notes are arranged by county:

Trails in Southeastern Wisconsin.SE WI bike trails

As the map on the right shows, southeastern Wisconsin enjoys a number of bicycle trails. Most of the long ones outside of Milwaukee county are former railroad or interurban tracks. Shorter trails are clustered in some of the cities and towns.

There are three main trail systems that lead beyond this region (and are described in more detail in the particular sections of this site).

  1. The route of the former North Shore Line has bike trails south from Milwaukee county through Racine and Kenosha counties and joining with Illinois trails (described in the Milwaukee-Chicago section).

  2. A former interurban leads north from Brown Deer Park through Ozaukee County and into Sheboygan county(described in the Milwaukee-Door county section).

  3. West from Milwaukee, the Hank Aaron Trail connects to the New Berlin Trail, and the Glacial Drumlin trail, leading almost to Madison (described in the Winona-Milwaukee section).

Other rail trails include

  • The Eisenbaum trail leading north from West Bend to Eden in Fond du Lac County (described in the Milwaukee-Fond du Lac section).
  • The Lake Country and Bugline trails in Waukesha County.
  • The Seven Waters Trail and White River Trail centered on Burlington (described in the Milwaukee-Elkhorn section).

A number of urban areas have their local trail systems. The most notable is the large number of trails through Milwaukee County Parks under the name of the Oak Leaf Trail. Other local systems are a trail running along Lake Michigan north from Kenosha, Lake Michigan and Root River Trails in Racine, the Fox River Trail in Waukesha, and trails along the Milwaukee River in West Bend.

See the Milwaukee section for more on Milwaukee County trails.
